Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class
To say that Canada’s premium compact sport-ute segment is hot, is like saying Yao Ming’s a tab lanky. At the end of ’07, the segment was up 80 per cent over the previous year, with 2008 shaping up to be another stellar outing. In light of the numbers, it’s no wonder Mercedes-Benz is calling the introduction of the new five-seat GLK 350 4Matic sport utility its most important launch of the year, even though it’s “a little later than some competitors.” Based on the new C-Class sedan platform, the all-wheel driver will debut in January in the $40,000-plus price bracket, with a goal of showing that, “compact doesn’t mean compromising.” Power comes from a 3.5-litre V6 engine, mated to a seven-speed automatic gearbox and making 272 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The run from 0 to 100 km/h takes 6.7 seconds. The standard features list includes 19-inch wheels, a panoramic sunroof, rain-sensing wipers, ESP, ABS, hill start assist, and most important, Agility Control Suspension, which helps give the GLK smart road manners despite its height. The Mercedes’ option list includes such welcome toys as leather seating, 20-inch wheels, navigation, a rear view camera, Harmon Kardon stereo and a rear seat entertainment system.
