Mercedes-Benz recently updated the well-respected M-Class lineup. In addition to slight cosmetic changes inside and out, new
for 2009 is the ML320 Bluetec, which replaces the ML320 CDI as the ‘alternative fuel’ option. While the engine is of the same
displacement and still produces 210 hp, the 400 lb-ft of torque is simply breathtaking, as is the 900-km per tank range. And,
because this is one of the new ‘clean’ diesels, the Bluetec system reduces particulate emissions by 80 per cent. The rest of the
range breaks down with the 268 hp 3.5-litre V6 ML350, and the 382 hp 5.5-litre V8 in the ML550. Finally, the 503 hp ML63 AMG
is a Porsche 911-baiter with its massive wheels, street-tuned suspension and huge brakes. In any guise, the US-built M-Class
offers a polished driving experience in all sorts of conditions with its full-time four-wheel drive, four-wheel independent suspension
and segment-exclusive seven-speed automatic transmission. Pricing ranges from $59,900 for the ML350 to $97,500 for the tirechewing
ML63 AMG.
